Adopt A Mom

An event to honor our elderly and cultural diversity

2026 Adopt-A-Mom Luncheon

Date: Sunday, May 3, 2026

Time: 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM

Location: Hale Pulama Mau, Kuakini Home

As part of the JWSF Community Service, an Adopt-a-Mom program will be held at Hale Pulama Mau on Sunday, May 3, 2026. Adopt-a-Mom is a brainchild of Lillian Yajima who was concerned that those without children may not be honored on Mother's Day. She even went to the legislature so a Sunday in May would be designated as "Adopt-a-Mom" Day. JWSF continues this tradition with an annual luncheon for the residents of Kuakini Home second floor. Our program will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Interested JWSF members are asked to volunteer to bring food or to contribute for the purchase of food items. Also, members may sign up to attend. Anyone interested in making a contribution for the lunch (food items or donation) or in attending the event, should contact Irene Nakamoto or Corday Feagins at community-service@jwsf.org.

History

The first Adopt-A-Mom was held in May 1996. Throughout the years, this special event held on the 3rd Sunday of May has become a valued friendship tea tradition. It acknowledges and values the contributions made by our aging population and extends our appreciation to them. Notable guests from the consulates, government, community and the reigning Cherry Blossom Court honor these women. Members prepare Japanese dishes, cultural groups entertain and adopted moms (and dads) share interesting stories about themselves.
